Root Canals Suck

In this year of 2010 - that is two thousand and ten, one would think with all the new medical procedures and discoveries they are making, a root canal would be painless. Not for me.
I just had my third root canal in my life, and it still sucks. It hurt. More than once. It all hurt. I just kept thinking I had bad luck with dentists. So each time I've had one, I end up thinking they must just be good with the easy, every day stuff. So I change dentists, you know, in case something like a root canal comes up again.
I really like the Dentist we are seeing now. I innocently went in today thinking all would be well. However, flash backs of my last root canal kept coming back. It was a nightmare. Like a root canal that everyone - well. has nightmares about.
So, I could feel my anxiety creeping up, higher and higher. I kept it to myself. Tried to be funny and witty, no sweat. I could handle this. People get root canals every day, right? I knew it could not possibly take over four hours in the chair again. When I had told my current dentist about that, he had seemed appalled. He said It's never taken him over two hours. And that it would be painless.
He lied. Because my blood pressure was 140 over 80, he said he couldn't use the good anesthetic, he had to use the weaker solution. but he didn't tell me this until half way through the procedure, because it hurt so much he kept hitting a nerve. I had more shots in my gums than I can even remember.
And, the office was very busy that day, so the assistant had to keep leaving, and the NASTY tasting chemicals kept going down my throat. I wondered how dangerous that was for my system.
How did this happen to me - again? I liked this Dentist and everybody that worked there. I trusted them. One of the reasons I chose them is that they offer one visit crowns or caps, called Cerec, in case I ever needed a root canal. And when I did finally need one, he said he didn't want to use that on me because of the chance that it could break.
This all happened three weeks ago. Tomorrow I'm supposed to go back for the permanent crown. I hope I can make myself go. Wish me luck?

I had a root canal awhile back. And they are no fun. But the pain you would continue to experience without it sucks worse !
It's not supposed to hurt? It hurt off and on for the whole 3+ hours I was in the chair. The kind of sharp sudden pain that makes you jump and want to scream.
I know the pain would be worse if I had just let it go. But - I hate to admit it, I never went back, I still have the temporary cap. (Don't yell at me) :0
KT, I hate to say it; that's dumb. Did you go to a dentist or an endodontist?
I know. I really have a phobia with Dentists, and the weird thing is that I try to be brave and good about it, only to end up getting hurt every time.
I just went to a Dentist, I guess I need to find a good endodontist?
KT, Do you need a reccommendation; if you tell me the city, I'll try to get you one. My friend always fixes root canals dentists do.
I would really love to have your recommendation. I really need to do something about this.
You are SO good to try to help me like this. I feel so silly. My own kids go to the dentist without a qualm, thank God.

KT, My best friend is an Endodontist in Illinois, past President and founder of the chapter. If you wish a reccommendation, please write me. You should NOT have bad pain unless he took out a nerve, then again I'm not the doc.
